The three richest people in the US – Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett – own as much wealth as the bottom half of the US population, or 160 million people. Jeremy Hunt can attack me all he wants – but he is wrong to say the NHS is working | Stephen Hawking

The secretary of state for health, Jeremy Hunt, has challenged me on Twitter and in an article for the Sunday Telegraph over a talk I gave recently to the Royal Society of Medicine in defence of the NHS. Having been accused by Hunt of spreading “pernicious falsehoods”, I feel the need to respond. Hunt doesn’t deny that he dismissed research contradicting his claim of excess deaths due to poorer hospital care and staffing at the weekend. He admits he relied on one paper by Professor Nick Freeman

Not Your Average Hotel Stay in Key West, Florida

A mention of Key West typically conjures up images of palm trees, the awe-inspiring Overseas Highway and a tropical destination unique to the U.S. For many, it also brings to mind funky Duval Street. Running from the north end of the island to the south, Duval is home to some of the island’s most iconic bars, like Sloppy Joe’s and the Hog’s Breath Saloon. But just a few blocks off the bustle of Duval Street and steps from the seaport, there’s a quieter, calmer Key West. On these palm-lined stre

Cyber-attack on parliament leaves MPs unable to access emails

Parliament has been hit by a “sustained and determined” cyber-attack by hackers attempting to gain access to MPs’ and their staffers’ email accounts. Both houses of parliament were targeted on Friday in an attack that sought to gain access to accounts protected by weak passwords. MPs said they were unable to access their emails after the attack began. The estate’s digital services team said they had made changes to accounts to block out the hackers, and that the changes could mean staff were un

Donald Trump press ban: Guardian, BBC and CNN denied access to briefing

The White House barred several news organizations from an off-camera press briefing on Friday, handpicking a select group of reporters that included a number of conservative outlets friendly toward Donald Trump. The “gaggle” with Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, took place in lieu of his daily briefing and was originally scheduled as an on-camera event. But the White House press office announced later in the day that the Q&A session would take place off camera before only an “expa

Famine looms in four countries as aid system struggles to cope, experts warn

Famine is looming in four different countries, threatening unprecedented levels of hunger and a global crisis that is already stretching the aid and humanitarian system like never before, experts and insiders warn. Tens of millions of people in need of food aid in Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and Somalia are at the mercy not only of an overwhelmed aid system but also the protracted, mainly conflict-driven crises in their own countries, the humanitarian leaders say. While the generosity of d

Children saved from Nazis by 'British Schindler' plan memorial to parents

Their 11th-hour escape on the eve of the second world war became the stuff of legend, earning international recognition for the man who organised it, Sir Nicholas Winton. Now people spirited out of German-occupied Czechoslovakia when they were children are to pay homage to previously unsung heroes in the affair – the parents who boarded them on to Winton’s “kindertransport” trains bound for Britain in a desperate attempt to save them from the Nazis. A memorial recognising the agonising moral c

Hi! My name is Josh

The 13 Conservative MPs and Sammy Wilson of the DUP – whose 10 MPs give May her working majority in the Commons – have signed a letter condemning the failure of the draft withdrawal agreement to end the common fisheries policy as soon as the UK formally leaves the EU on March 30 2019.
